Varkaus is an industrial town whose identity is strongly linked to the surrounding water system. For anglers, it offers access to some of the best fishing grounds in Saimaa.

Popular Fishing Spots

• Haukivesi: Part of Greater Saimaa, famous for its large pike and good zander populations. The Linnansaari National Park is also located here.
• Pirtinvirta: A strait flowing through the city center, which is a popular spot for jigging for zander and perch.
• Kolovesi National Park: A rugged and wilderness-like national park that offers unique fishing experiences and the chance to catch a Saimaa landlocked salmon.

Fish Species

Many species can be caught in the waters of Varkaus:

• Zander and Pike: The most common game fish in the area.
• Perch: Large individuals can be found in the currents.
• Landlocked Salmon: A rare but sought-after catch, especially in Kolovesi.
• Saimaa Arctic Char: Critically endangered and protected.

Permits and Regulations
