Salmon

Salmon (Salmo salar)

The Atlantic salmon is considered by many anglers to be the ultimate prize. This powerful and fast migratory fish offers legendary battles and demands both patience and top-tier gear from the angler.

Characteristics and Habits

The salmon is identified by its slender, torpedo-shaped body, silvery sides, and relatively small head. Unlike brown trout, salmon typically have fewer black spots below the lateral line, a narrower caudal peduncle (tail wrist), and a more distinct fork in the tail fin. Salmon spend most of their adult lives feeding and growing rapidly at sea, but migrate back to rivers to spawn. In Finland, the Teno and Tornio rivers are the most famous salmon rivers.

Fishing

Salmon fishing often requires specialized equipment and licensing. The most popular fishing methods are:

  • River trolling (Soutu-uistelu): The traditional way of fishing for salmon on large rivers. Lures or flies are trolled from a rowboat backing down the river current.
  • Fly fishing: Wading and fly fishing on rivers is extremely popular. Salmon flies are often bright, colorful, and tied on double or treble hooks.
  • Offshore trolling: Trolling for Baltic salmon in the open sea (such as near the Γ…land Islands or the Gulf of Finland) is very popular in late spring.

Conservation and As a Food Fish

Many salmon stocks are vulnerable, and their fishing is strictly regulated by quotas, closed seasons, and size limits. Distinguishing between wild salmon and stocked (adipose fin-clipped) salmon and following local regulations is critical.

As a food fish, salmon is world-famous. Its fatty, red meat is highly versatile and perfect for plank-broiling (loimustus), smoking, curing (graavi), baking, and soups.
