Pike
Pike (Esox lucius)
Pike is one of Finland's most well-known and common predatory fish. It is easily recognizable by its elongated, torpedo-shaped body and its large, duck-billed mouth, which is full of sharp teeth.
Characteristics and Habits
The pike's coloration is usually greenish-yellow, with light spots or stripes on its sides. It thrives in a variety of water bodies, including lakes, rivers, and coastal waters. The pike is an ambush predator that waits hidden in vegetation or other structures and then strikes its prey quickly.
Fishing
Pike fishing is popular year-round. The most common fishing methods are:
- Casting: Various lures, such as spoons, crankbaits, and spinnerbaits, are effective.
- Jigging: Soft plastic jigs are effective, especially in deeper waters.
- Fly fishing: Large, flashy flies entice pike to strike.
- Ice fishing: Bait fishing and large balance jigs are popular among ice fishermen.
As a Food Fish
Pike is a good food fish, although its meat is quite bony. When prepared correctly, for example, baked or ground into fish cakes, it is very tasty. Smaller specimens should be released back to grow.
