Perch
Perch (Perca fluviatilis)
The perch, Finland's national fish, is one of our country's most common and easily recognizable fish. It is identified by its high, slightly humped body, greenish sides, and spiny dorsal fin.
Characteristics and Habits
The perch typically has dark vertical stripes on its sides and bright red pelvic and anal fins. It is a schooling fish that thrives in a wide variety of waters, from small ponds to large lakes and coastal waters. Perch are curious and active fish that move around during the day in search of food.
Fishing
The perch is a rewarding target for anglers because it is active almost all year round and eagerly strikes a wide variety of lures. Popular fishing methods include:
- Jigging: Small soft plastic jigs are very effective for perch fishing.
- Bait fishing: A traditional worm and bobber is a sure way to catch perch, especially in the summer.
- Ice fishing: In winter, perch is one of the most common catches for ice fishermen. Small vertical jigs and mormyskas work well.
As a Food Fish
Perch is an excellent food fish, with its white, low-fat meat being a delicacy for many. It is perfect for frying, smoking, or in soups. The small bones can be a challenge, but they soften when cooked.
