Zander

Zander (Sander lucioperca)

Zander, a predatory fish in the perch family, is one of the most sought-after game fish in Finland. It is recognizable by its slender, streamlined body, large, glassy eyes, and two sharp-spined dorsal fins.

Characteristics and Habits

The zander's coloration varies from greenish to gray, and it often has dark vertical stripes on its sides. Zander is a crepuscular predator that hunts small fish. It thrives best in large, murky lakes and sea bays with plenty of deeps and shoals.

Fishing

Zander fishing is popular year-round. The most effective fishing methods are:

• Jigging: Soft plastic jigs and vertical jigs fished near the bottom are unbeatable in open-water months.
• Trolling: Wobblers and weighted lures work well in large open lakes during warm summer evenings.
• Casting: Zander can also be caught by casting near drop-offs and shoals at dusk.
• Ice Fishing: Zander are caught through the ice in deep basins (6–14 meters). Large balance jigs (7–11 cm), vertical jigs tipped with baitfish strips, and vertical soft plastics produce solid strikes, especially around dawn and dusk.

As Food

Zander is one of the most prized food fish in Finland. Its meat is white, firm, and has few bones. It is excellent for frying, grilling, or in soups. Zander fillets are a delicacy for many.
