General Description
The Tornionjoki, locally known as Väylä, is a legendary river for large salmon. Every summer, tens of thousands of salmon migrate up the river to spawn, attracting anglers from all over the world. There are numerous famous fishing spots along the river, and the fishing traditions are strong.
Fish Species and Fishing
Salmon fishing is the main attraction of the Tornionjoki. The most popular fishing methods are fly fishing and boat trolling. It is possible to catch salmon weighing over 20 kilograms from the river.
- Salmon: The main catch, with a high average weight. The best season is from mid-June to the end of July.
- Trout: Also a valuable fish found in the river, but it is protected.
- Grayling: A common catch, especially in the upper parts of the river.
- Whitefish: Caught especially in the spring and autumn.
Rules and Permits
Fishing is strictly regulated. You will need the Tornionjoki joint license, which covers a large area on both the Finnish and Swedish sides. It is very important to familiarize yourself with the rules concerning permitted fishing gear, catch quotas, and closed seasons. The rules may change annually.
