General Description
Kukkolankoski is not just a fishing spot, but also a cultural and historical attraction. The area features old fences, fishing gear, and buildings that tell the story of a centuries-old fishing culture. In the summer, the area is full of life as locals catch whitefish using the traditional dip-netting technique.
Fish Species and Fishing
The specialty of Kukkolankoski is whitefish dip-netting, where a long-handled net is used to catch whitefish from the rapids. Visitors can watch this skillful practice and taste freshly smoked whitefish on site.
- Whitefish: The main catch, caught using traditional methods. The best season is from July to August.
- Salmon: Salmon also run up the rapids, and fishing for them is popular slightly downstream.
- Grayling: Thrives at the head of the rapids and in the calmer pools.
Rules and Permits
Whitefish dip-netting is reserved for local fishing rights owners. Other anglers must follow the rules of the Tornionjoki joint license. There may be special restrictions and permit practices for shore fishing in the rapids area, which should be checked in advance.
