General Description
Vanhankaupunginkoski is the last rapids of the Vantaa River before it flows into the sea at Vanhankaupunginlahti. It is a historically significant place, as Helsinki was originally founded on the banks of this very rapids in 1550. Today, it is a popular recreational area and one of the most famous urban fishing spots in Southern Finland.
Fish Stocks and Fishing
The fishing season at the rapids usually begins in early April and continues until late autumn. The main target fish are trout and salmon, which are regularly stocked in the river. Rainbow trout, grayling, and whitefish can also be caught.
- Trout: By far the most sought-after catch in the rapids. The best times are spring and autumn.
- Salmon: Migrating salmon are found especially in June-July.
- Rainbow Trout: Stocked at catchable size, and is a sure catch throughout the season.
Rules and Permits
In addition to the national fisheries management fee, fishing at Vanhankaupunginkoski requires a special fishing permit for Vanhankaupunginkoski issued by the City of Helsinki. The permit is personal and can be purchased online. Remember to check the current rules and restrictions before you start fishing.
