Sea Trout (Salmo trutta trutta)

Sea trout is the sea-migrating form of the brown trout. It is one of Finland's most prized and sought-after game fish, known for its fighting spirit and beauty.

Characteristics and Habits

Sea trout have silvery flanks covered with black spots. Their body is torpedo-shaped and powerful. Young individuals (smolts) migrate from rivers to the sea to grow and return to their native rivers to spawn once they reach sexual maturity. In the sea, they mainly feed on herring and sprat.

Fishing

Sea trout fishing is popular on the coast and in rivers. The best seasons are spring and autumn when the fish are actively moving near the shore.

• Casting from the shore: Long-casting and narrow lures, such as spoons and wobblers, are effective.
• Fly fishing: Especially in rivers, fly fishing is a popular and effective way to catch sea trout.
• Trolling: In sea areas, trolling is a common method for fishing sea trout.

Conservation and as Food

Many sea trout populations are endangered, and the species is strictly regulated. It is very important to follow minimum size limits, closed seasons, and conservation areas. When caught responsibly, sea trout is an excellent food fish. Its meat is reddish and tasty, and it is well-suited for curing, smoking, and baking.
